Some of the pictures and stories shown on the following pages may be disturbing. In many of these cases, the stories are tragic. People have been seriously injured and in some instances, killed. Those involved frequently have suffered very significant, sometimes permanent injuries. The patients, their families, and their friends have all suffered as a result of these events.
We often receive calls from patients or their families asking us about what happened during an incident. The following photos and stories are provided, similar to a newspaper account, for educational and informational purposes. It is our hope that through education, tragic incidents such as these can be prevented. Every GCVFD member that responded to the calls send their thoughts and condolences to everyone affected by the incidents.

Station 2 Runs the Outdoor Investigation

On Friday August 13th 2010, Morgan County Communications alerted The Great Cacapon Volunteer Fire Department at 1829 hrs for the mutual assist to Berkeley Springs Company 1 for an outdoor investigation in the area of 646 Cold Run Valley Road. Brush 26 responded with the Captain (Grimley) and a crew of 2 at 1835 hrs. While enroute Chief 1 (Steiner) from Berkeley Springs Fire advised it was a controlled burn with a correct address of 128 Mimosa Lane. All units were placed in service. Brush 26 returned to service at 1835 hrs.

Two Vehicle MVA with Entrapment & Flyout

On Monday August 9th 2010, Morgan County Communications alerted The Great Cacapon Volunteer Fire Department for the mutual assist to Berkeley Springs Company 1 for a two vehicle motor vehicle accident with entrapment in the 6600 block of Martinsburg Road. Rescue Engine 2 responded with a crew of 4. While enroute Captain 1 from Berkeley Springs Fire requested Rescue Engine 2 to establish a landing zone just west of the accident scene in the open field. Rescue Engine 2 arrived at the location requested by Captain 1 and established the landing zone for Trooper 5 (Maryland State Police). Once the patient was loaded Rescue Engine 2 returned back to service. Captain 1 then requested Rescue Engine 2 to transfer to Station 1. Rescue Engine 2 notified Morgan County Communications of a change in status and completed the transfer to station 1 until the Squad and Engine returned.

2 House Runs Mutual For The Brush

On Saturday August 7th 2010, Morgan County Communications alerted The Great Cacapon Volunteer Fire Department for the Tanker to assist Berkeley Springs Company 1 and South Morgan Comapny 3 at 1522 Hrs for a brush fire at 411 Shade Lane off of Mountain Run Road. Engine Tanker 22 with a crew of 2 responded at 1557 Hrs. Berkeley Springs units arrived on the scene and Engine 15 established Shade Lane command and advised of a 1/2 acre involved with the need for 4 wheel drive to gain access. Command requested additional brush units alerting Company 2 for Brush 26 at 1558hrs. Brush 26 responded with a crew of 3 on the dispatch. Engine 15's crew established a line around the perimeter of the ire to contain it to just 1/2 acre involved this also prevented the fire from reaching a camper trailer. Brush 3-61 arrived on the scene at 1540 hrs and went to work on the west flank of the fire. Engine Tanker 22 arrived on the scene at 1548 Hrs and deployed a 3' hose line to fill the brush units. Brush 26 arrived on the scene at 1549 hrs and began work on the east flank of the fire. All units returned to service at 1709 Hrs.

Fully Involved Structure

Once again On Wednesday August 4th 2010, Morgan County Communications alerted The Great Cacapon Volunteer Fire Department for the Engine and Tanker task force at 1920 Hrs for a fully involved residential structure fire in Berkeley Springs Volunteer Fire Company 1's first due on Jim West Road. Rescue Engine 2 and Tanker 2 with a crew of 2 responded at 1930 Hrs. Other units due on the assignment include Engine 11, Engine 12, Squad 1 (Berkeley Springs Fire), Tanker 43, Car 43 (Orleans Fire), Engine 53 (Hancock MD Fire), Engine 30 (Hedgesville Fire). Berkeley Springs units arrived on the scene and established Jim West Road command and advised of a fully involved residential structure with power lines down. Engine 11 requested Morgan County Communications to advise Rescue Engine 2 to establish a draft site on Potomac Road for the tanker shuttle. Rescue Engine 2 requested Station 32 (Paw Paw) to transfer an engine to station 2. Engine 32 responded to Station 2 at 1950 hrs. Engine 30 (Hedgesville Fire) was requested to transfer to Station 1 Berkeley Springs and then requested to the fire scene. Engine 20 Reynolds Store Fire) transferred to Berkeley Springs Station 1 at 2045 Hrs. Jim West Road command advised the fire was under control at 2030 hrs. Rescue Engine 2 returned to service at 2223 Hrs.

Barn Fire 3's First Due

On Wednesday August 4th 2010, Morgan County Communications alerted The Great Cacapon Volunteer Fire Department for the tanker task force at 1358 Hrs for a barn fire in South Morgan Volunteer Fire Company 3's first due at 8845 Winchester Grade Road. Engine Tanker 22 with a crew of 2 and Tanker 2 also with a crew of 2 responded at 1403 Hrs. Other units due on the assignment include Tanker 320 (South Morgan Fire), Engine 11, Engine 12, Subarban 1 (Berkeley Springs Fire), Engine 20 (Reynolds Store Fire), Engine 53, Car 5 )Hancock MD Fire), Engine Tanker 50 (Back Creek Valley Fire). Tanker 320 arrived on the scene and established Winchester Grade Road command and requested all tnkers stage until further. Engine Tanker 22 requested Morgan County Communications to alert station 32 (Paw Paw Fire) to transfer a tanker to station 2. Station 32 advised they would do an in station stand-by. Wichester Grade Road command advised the fire was knocked down with multiple hot spots and requested manpower. Engine Tanker 22 was transferred from the scene to Berkeley Springs Company 1 station at 1503 Hrs. Engine Tanker 22 returned to service at 1619 Hrs and Tanker 2 remained on the scene until clearing at 1630 Hrs. Winchester Grade Road command advised the fire was extinguished and all units were returned to service.

Motor Vehicle Into The Tree

On Friday July 30th 2010, Morgan County Communications alerted The Great Cacapon Volunteer Fire Department at 1258 Hrs for a vehicle accident in the 1800 block of Detour Road. Rescue Engine 2 with a crew of 3 and the chief responded at 1302 Hrs. While enroute units were advised of a two vehicle accident with unkown injuries. Rescue Engine 2 arrived on the scene and reported a single vehicle into the tree with heavy damage. Chief 2 established Detour Road command and upon further investigation found the patient had been ejected out through the passenger side window. The patient refused any medical treatment and Rescue Engine 2 remained on the scene until the roadway was cleared at 1346hrs.

Motor Vehicle Head On With 2 Flyouts

On July 26th 2010, Morgan County Communications alerted Station 2 at 1317 Hrs for a 2 vehicle accident reported head on with entrapment at 4527 Hancock Road. Berkeley Springs Squad 1, Engine 11, Great Cacapon Rescue Engine 2, Morgan County Medic 73,74,72, Hancock Engine 52, Squad 59, Medic 592 were due for the assignment. Rescue Engine 2 with a crew of 6 and the chief responded at 1320 Hrs. While enroute units were advised of a tractor trailer vs auto head-on with entrapment on Hancock Road north of US Silica Sand. Squad 59 arrived on the scene and confirmed the report of a head-on collision with entrapment. Chief 1 arrived on the scene next and assumed Hancock Road command. Rescue Engine 2 upon arriving on the scene at 1331 Hrs was diverted to the landing zone on Airport Road at 1338 Hrs. Another landing zone was established at US Silica. Trooper 3 landed at the landing zone on Airport Road and Medstar landed at US Silica. Rescue Engine 2 arrived at the landing zone at 1351 Hrs. Maryland State Police Trooper 3 transported 1 patient at 1426 Hrs and after Trooper departed the landing zone Rescue Engine 2 then transfered to Berkeley Springs Station 1. Hancock Road remained closed for several hours during cleanup of the roadway. Rescue Engine 2 returned to service at 1645 Hrs and command advised all hazards cleared from the roadway and command terminated at 1800 Hrs.

Early Morning, Muliple Calls Keeps Station 2 Busy

In the early morning of Monday July 19th beginning at 0002 Hrs The Great Cacapon Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for the first call a mutual assist to Paw Paw Company 32 for residential structure fire on Winchester Street. Rescue Engine 2 with a crew of 3 responded at 0005 Hrs. While enroute Morgan County Communications advised all units of a fully involved structure. Rescue Engine 32 arrived on the scene at 0008 Hrs and advised Morgan County Communications of an outbuilding that was on the ground holding company 32 units and transferring Rescue Engine 2 to station 32. The second call was dispatched at 0008 Hrs as Morgan County Communications once again alerted station 2 for the medical assist on Detour Road.. BLS 2 responded to assist the medic unit. Rescue Engine 2 was released from stand by at 0230 Hrs and shortly after leaving station 32 the Paw Paw Fire Company 32 was alerted for the assist to law enforcement for an unconcious person as a result of the motor vehicle accident on Paw Paw Road. Rescue Engine 2 arrived on the scene and assisted until Rescue Engine 32 and Ambulance 32 arrived. While on the scene on Paw Paw Road Morgan County Communications advised Rescue Engine 2 of a large tree down in the roadway in he 14000 block of Cacapon Road. Rescue Engine 2 cleared the scene at Paw Paw Road and responded to Cacapon Road arriving on the scene to confirm a large tree blocking the roadway. Rescue Engine 2 operated on the scene for 20 minutes and aain returned to service. Shortly after arriving at station 2 Rescue Engine 2 was again alerted for the assist to Berkeley Springs Company 1 for the Automatic Alarm on Spriggs Road. A firefighter from Company 1 arrived on the scene 5 minutes later and placed all units into service.

Vehicle Accident with Flyout

On the afternoon of Sunday July 11th at 1426 Hrs The Great Cacapon Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for the vehicle Accident (Motorcycle) in the 12000 block of Cacapon Road. Rescue Engine 2 with a crew of 4 and the Chief followed by Subarban 2 with 3 both responded at 1431 Hrs. Rescue Engine 2 arrived in the area of Fishers Bridge and advised Morgan County Communications they were unable to locate anything. Morgan County Communications then advised of the accident being west of Fishers Bridge. With this information Chief 2 requested Paw Paw Company 32 alerted at 1440 HRs. Rescue Engine 2 arrived on the scene in the 15000 Block of Cacapon Road advising all units of the correct location. Medic 7-4 requested aviation. Rescue Engine 32 established the landing zone at the intersection of Constant Run Road and Cacapon Road at 1615 Hrs.
Units on scene included Rescue Engine 2, Subarban 2 (Great Cacapon Fire), Rescue Engine 32 (Paw Paw Fire), Medic 74 (Morgan County Rescue).

Mutual For The Smoke In The Structure

On the morning of Friday July 9th at 0630 Hrs The Great Cacapon Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for the mutual assist to Berkeley Springs Company 1 for the smoke in the structure at 4511 Pious Ridge Road. Rescue Engine 2 with a crew of 3 and the Assistant Chief followed by Tanker 2 with 2 both responded at 0633 Hrs. Medic 73 arrived on the scene and advised of light smoke conditions in the basement. Engine 12 arrived advising all units to stage at Pious Ridge Road. Company 2 units arrived at 0650 Hrs. The fire was contained to an appliance with command 1 placing the box in service. All units returned to service at 0702 Hrs.
Units on scene included Engines 51, Engine 53 (Hancock Md Fire), Engine 12, Tanker 12 (Berkeley Springs Fire), Tanker 43 (Little Orleans Md Fire), Tanker 3-20 (South Morgan Fire).
