ATTENTION
Some of the pictures and stories shown on the following pages may be disturbing. In many of these cases, the stories are tragic. People have been seriously injured and in some instances, killed. Those involved frequently have suffered very significant, sometimes permanent injuries. The patients, their families, and their friends have all suffered
as a result of these events.

We often receive calls from patients or their families asking us about what happened during an incident. The following photos and stories are provided, similar to a newspaper account, for educational and informational purposes. It is our hope that through education, tragic incidents such as these can be prevented.

Every GCVFD member that responded to the calls send their thoughts and condolences
to everyone affected by the incidents.

July 7 2010

Hot Weather Brings Multiple Brush Calls

On the morning of Wednesday July 7th at 0947 Hrs The Great Cacapon Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for the brush fire in the 3000 block of Cacapon Road. Safety 2 (Jody Mcjilton) arrived on the scene at 0949 Hrs and advised Morgan County Communications of a small fire that was under control. Tanker 2 with 2 responded at 0950 Hrs followed shortly after by Brush 26. Tanker 2 arrived on the scene and confirmed a small fire under control. Tanker 2 placed Brush 26 back into service. Tanker 2 performed a wetdown of the area involved.

While operating on the scene of the original brush fire a passer by advised of a second brush fire west of the original fire Brush 26 was requested to check the report of the second brush fire. Upon arriving on the locaion of the second fire Brush 26 confirmed another small fire that was under control. Brush 26 wetted down the area and both units returned to service at 1006 Hrs.

July 4 2010

4th Of July Brings Multiple Calls

On the afternoon of Sunday July 4th at 1905 Hrs The Great Cacapon Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for the brush fire at 50 Fonthill Lane. Fire Police 2-1 (Kieth Shade) arrived on the scene at 1907 Hrs and advised Station 2 the fire was under control only Tanker 2 would be needed. Tanker 2 with 2 responded at 1909 Hrs. Tanker 2 arrived on the scene at 1919 Hrs and confirmed the fire under control. Tanker 2 performed a wetdown of the area involved and returned to service at 1929 Hrs.

Station 2 was again alerted for a brush unit to assist Berkeley Springs (Company 1) for a brush fire at 95 Golf Street at 2213 hrs. Brush 26 responded with 2 at 2216 Hrs. Tanker 2 was alerted to assist and went responding with a crew of 2 at 2020 Hrs. While enroute dispatch advised Brush 26 that a firefighter from Berkeley Springs Company 1 was on the scene advising that the fire was under control requesting Brush 26 to continue in. Brush 26 arrived on the scene at 2233 Hrs and confirmed the report. Brush 26 placed Tanker 2 in service and extinguished the hot spots. Brush 26 returned to service at 2252 Hrs.

June 19 2010

Multiple Calls Including A Mutual To Berkeley County

On the afternoon of Saturday June 19th at 1319 Hrs The Great Cacapon Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for the mutual aid assist to Berkeley County Company 30 (Hedgesville Fire) for the fully involved structure fire. Tanker 2 responded with 2 at 1320 Hrs. Once arriving on the scene Tanker 2 assisted in the water shuttle operations while the crew assisted in the mopup operations. Rescue Engine 2 was alerted for the station transfer to Berkeley Springs Company 1 at 1433 Hrs. Rescue Engine 2 responded with the chief at 1435 Hrs. Tanker 2 shuttled 3 loads of water and returned to service at 1513 Hrs.

Station 2 was again alerted for the electrical fire in the residence at 85 Chactaw Lane at 1726 hrs. Rescue Engine 2 responded with 4 and the chief at 1730hrs. Rescue Engine 2 arrived on the scene at 1732hrs reporting nothing showing on side "A" alpha. Chief 2 assumed command crews were met outsideby the homeowner who advised that she smelled smoke opened her closet when smoke came out. A crew of 2 entered the structure to find a strong odor of wires burning. Tanker 2 with a crew of 2, BLS 2 with a crew of 3 both responded at 1733 Hrs. Crews determined it to be a faulty hot water heater in the closet. All unit returned to service.

June 11 2010

MVA Cyclist Down

On the afternoon of Friday June 11th at 1516 Hrs The Great Cacapon Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a vehicle accident with 1 down in the 2000 block of Cacapon Road. Rescue Engine 2 responded with the chief at 1520 Hrs. While enroute dispatch advised of 1 patient down in the roadway. Rescue Engine 2 arrived on scene to find one person in the roadway CHief 2 assumed command and Cacapon Road was shut down. Medic 73 arrived on the scene and transported one patient to War Memorial Hospital at 1548 Hrs.Command advised of all hazards cleared from the roadway. All units returned to service at 1142 Hrs. Units on the scene Engine 15, Squad 1 (Berkeley Springs Fire), Rescue Engine 2, BLS 2 (Great Cacapon Fire), Medic 73 (Morgan County Rescue Squad).

June 3 2010

2 Vehicle MVA Head On

Later in the morning of Thursday June 3rd at 1026 Hrs The Great Cacapon Volunteer Fire Company was again alerted for a 2 vehicle accident head on in the 5400 block of Rockford Road. Rescue Engine 2 responded at 1030 Hrs. Rescue Engine 2 arrived on scene to find two vehicles that had collided head on with 1 patient transport and 1 patient refusal. Rescue Engine 2 established command (Jason Steiner). Medic 73 transported the patient to the hospital with minor njuries. Command advised of al hazards cleared from the roadway at 1142 Hrs. All units returned to service at 1142 Hrs.

Fuel Spill Alerts 2 House

On the morning of Thursday June 3rd at 0808 Hrs The Great Cacapon Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a fuel spill in the 2260 block of Detour Road. Rescue Engine 2 responded with a crew of 3. While enroute dispatch advised of an unknown amount in the roadway with no idea of how it got there. Rescue Engine 2 arrived at 0824 hrs to find aprroximately 10 gallons that had already been contained. Crews cleaned up the containment and returned to service at 0850 Hrs.

2 House Runs Two Seperate Medicals

On the afternoon of Monday May 31st The Great Cacapon Volunteer Fire Company was alerted the snake bite at 176 Spring Street. Rescue Engine 2 and BLS 2 responded from the boot on Central Avenue. Units arrived to find a child that had been bitten by a copperhead snake. Medic 74 transported the victim to the hospital. Rescue Engine 2 and BLS 2 returned to service and went enroute back to the boot drive.

within 5 minutes of returning to the boot drive The Great Cacapon Fire Department was again alerted for a shooting victim on Detour Road. BLS 2 with a crew of 3 and Medic 74 Responded. BLS 2 requested Rescue Engine 2 to assist for the landing zone. Rescue Engine 2 responded with a crew of 4 and the Chief to Hammerhill Lane and Detour Road for the landing zone setup. Dispatch advised command and Chief 2 that the Heli was grounded due to weather. Medic 74 advised Dispatch they were transporting to the hospital and all units returned to service.

2 House Runs Fully Involved

On the evening of Tuesday May 25th at 1537 Hrs The Great Cacapon Volunteer Fire Company was alerted to assist Company 1 (Berkeley Springs Fire) for a reported fully involved residential structure fire in the 5000 block of River Road. Rescue Engine 2 responded with a crew of 3 and Tanker 2 responded with a crew of 2. WHile units were enroute dispatch advised of the possible entrapment. Engine 51 (Hancock Md Fire) arrived on the scene advising of a fully involved residential structure with partial collapse. Rescue Engine 2 was diverted to Potomac Road for Draft operations. All occupants of the residence were accounted with no entrapment. Units on scene Rescue Engine 2, Engine Tanker 2, Tanker 2 (Great Cacapon Fire), Engine 11, Squad 1, Tanker 12, Suburban 1 (Berkeley Springs Fire), Tanker 320 (South Morgan Fire), Engine 51, Engine 53 (Hancock Fire), Tanker 43 (Little Orleans Fire), Tanker 55 (Needmore Pa Fire), Engine 35, Tanker 32 (Hedgesville Fire), Medic 74 (Morgan County Rescue), Rehab Unit 255 (Washington County Fire). All units returned to service at 1934 Hrs.

Rescue Engine Runs Transfer Then Propane Leak

On Thursday May 13th at 1050 Hrs The Great Cacapon Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a station transfer to Company 1 (Berkeley Springs Fire) who was on the scene of a propane leak on South Washington Street. Rescue Engine 2 responded. At 1106 Hrs after completing the transfer command 1 advised dispatch of the request for Rescue Engine 2 to the scene of the leak. This information prompted the dispatch of Rescue Engine 2. Rescue Engine 2 arrived on the scene at 1108 Hrs and assisted with operations and placed an 1 1/2 hoseline in operation. Route 522 was completely shut down during the incident.Units on scene Rescue Engine 2 (Great Cacapon Fire), Engine 11, Subarban 1 (Berkeley Springs Fire), Engine 53 (Hancock Fire), Engine 43 (Little Orleans Fire), Morgan County Rescue assisted with an evacuation of the area. All units returned to service at 1558 Hrs.

Station 2 Alerted For The Residential Structure

On Thursday April 29th at 1324 Hrs The Great Cacapon Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a residential structure fire with possible extension to a barn in the 2900 block of Cacapon Road. Engine Tanker 22, Tanker 2, and BLS 2 responded. While enroute dispatch advised of the possible need for 4 wheel drive to access the fire. This information prompted the the dispatch of Brush 26 and Brush 2. Engine Tanker 22 and Engine 11 (Berkeley Springs Fire) arrived on scene to find the residence on the ground with a about an acre brush fire. Assistant Chief 1 established command and Engine Tanker 22 laid 500' of supply line back the driveway to access the fire Engine 11 set up a fold' a tank and supplied Engine Tanker 22. The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes. It was determined that there was no extension to the barn. Units on scene Engine Tanker 22, Tanker 2, Brushs 26, Brush 2, BLS 2 (Great Cacapon Fire), Engine 11, Tanker 12 (Berkeley Springs Fire), Engine 53 (Hancock Fire), Tanker 55, brush 55 (Needmore Fire), Brush 32 (Paw Paw Fire), Tanker 43 (Little Orleans Fire), Special thanks to all those who came to help.

Station 2 Alerted For A First Due Brush

On Wednesday April 21st at 1425 Hrs The Great Cacapon Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for the brush fire in the 1000 block of Power House Road. Brush 26 responded with a crew of 2 as well as Engine Tanker 22 with a crew of 2. Brush 26 advised dspatch of heavy smoke showing from the station. Wjile enroute dispatch advised unit of member Andy Stotler on the scene reporting a half acre involved. Brush 26 arrived to confirm this at 1431 Hrs and firefighter Jason Steiner assumed command and requested a second brush unit from station 2 as well as brush 32 (Paw Paw Fire) and a tanker from Coompany 1 (Berkeley Springs Fire). Within minutes of the dispatch both brush 2 and brush 32 responded Engine Tanker 22 deployed an attack line up the right flank to knock down the fire. Brush 26 made access from an old logging road to the top of the fire. The fire was contained and knocked down in 20 minutes with op up operations. units remained on the scene and were placed back in service at 1556 Hrs.
