Governor Manchin Lifts Outdoor Burn Ban
Thu. Sep 30th 2010
Submitted By: James Hopkins
Governor Joe Manchin announced Thursday an end to an outdoor burning ban on eight counties in West Virginia's eastern panhandle. Jefferson, Berkeley, Morgan, Hampshire, Mineral, Grant, Hardy and Pendleton counties are now allowed to burn fires outside. The governor cited recent rainfall as the reason for his decision.
The order is effective immediately. The counties are still required to follow fall forest fire rules which take effect Friday.
Burn Ban In Effect
Sat. Sep 4th 2010
Submitted By: Jason Steiner
It's been a long and hot summer in West Virginia---but in the eastern panhandle it's also been a very dry summer. The effects of that are now coming home to roost. Forests of the region are ripe with the potential for a forest fire.
It's become so bad Governor Manchin is issuing a ban on all outdoor burning until further notice. The governor issued the executive order on Friday. However, the ban doesn't take effect until Tuesday morning at 8:00am. The delay in the order will allow West Virginians to enjoy one last campfire for the summer before they become illegal.
The ban covers any fires built for camping, heat, or burning of debris.
The burning ban remains in effect until further notice and the governor rescinds the order. Division of Forestry officials say that will probably be when the region receives measureable rainfall.
The ban is in effect in Berkeley, Grant, Hampshire, Hardy, Jefferson, Mineral, Morgan, and Pendleton Counties.
